When considering whether to file a child abuse report, it may help to reflect on questions that help you assess the situation. Remember, if you suspect or know of abuse, you must report it.
Do the family members:
- Give explanations about a toddler’s injury that doesn’t match what the toddler said happened?
- Give a reason for a suspicious event that is not consistent with a child’s developmental level?
- Change stories when giving reasons for the suspected abuse?
- Make multiple excuses for the child’s injury?
- Minimizes the seriousness of the child’s injury?
- Belittle the child or constantly criticize the child’s behavior?
- Show no concern for the child’s injuries?
- Consistently blame the child’s siblings for the injury?
